A Jamaican man has been arrested after he tried to bring honey back from the island, to his home state of Maryland.

According to the NY Times, Leon Haughton brought back three jars of honey but was detained for customs officers detained Haughton and police arrested him, accusing him of smuggling in not honey but liquid meth.

Haughton spent three months in jail before all charges were dropped and two rounds of law enforcement lab tests showed no controlled substances in the bottles.

Government officials said a test run at the airport had a positive result, WJLA reported.

"A specially trained drug-sniffing dog was alerted to the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, and a preliminary test fone by the police officers further tested positive for a controlled dangerous substance. The confirmatory laboratory test showed there was no controlled dangerous substance inside the honey," a spokesperson for the Anne Arundel State's Attorney's Office told WJLA.

"They messed up my life," Haughton said. "I want the world to know that the system is not right. If I didn't have strong people around me, they would probably leave me in jail. You're lost in the system."

Since the ordeal, Haughton lost the two jobs he worked, his insurance was revoked, and his credit was damaged. He is currently staying in a hotel. He is now claiming that he is afraid to travel.

“I’m scared to even travel right now,” Haughton said according to the news outlet. “You’re innocent, and you can end up in jail.”
